Valentine's Tips for the Procrastinator

Okay, so you've procrastinated until the last minute and now you have to pony up. What do you do for Valentine's Day? Here are some last minute tips that might save the day.

Baked Goods

Most people don't eat dessert every night, so the appearance of baked goods often signals a special occasion. If you can bake something yourself, that would be great. If not, stop at a bakery and pick up some special nibble that will show your valentine that you remembered him or her. It doesn't have to be Valentine's Day bait, i.e., red baked goods, cakes replete with hearts or cherubs, but it does have to be something your valentine enjoys.

Margaritas

Women love margaritas. They are one of the most popular mixed drinks ordered in the United States, and the urban myth about groups of women going out partying on margaritas isn't as much of a myth as you might think. If you can, make your own recipe (Here's mine). If you're in a hurry, prepared mixes can be found at any liquor or wine and spirits store.

Don't forget the presentation. Get a nice glass, a lime, and some salt to make the presentation Valentine's Day worthy.

Make the Bed

If you want some romance, pay attention to detail. Put fresh linen on the bed and throw a decorative spread over the top of it. If you don't have a spread or comforter, try placing a single red rose on the center of the bed, or placing a heart shaped pillow or stuffed animal on his/her side. If your bedroom is a disaster, make up an air mattress in the living room. The presence of a group of candles, or better, a fireplace, would help set the scene.

Get Creative With the Card

Cards don't have to be expensive and elaborate confections. Take a piece of copy paper, fold it in quarters and write 'I love you' on it. Use colored pens, or block writing. Inside write, 'You are my everything', with an IOU for a nice walk along the beach or down a country lane. If you have the time, draw two stick figures holding hands. Your personal approach will gain you brownie points.

Fortune Cookie Madness

Buy a bag of fortune cookies and find two that have fortunes that slip out without breaking the cookie. Slip your own fortune inside. The more authentic your fortune looks, the more entertaining the reaction of your valentine will be.

Believe It

For three hours, or however long it takes you to get through the evening, believe that this is a day for lovers . . .your day. Believing will make all of the difference.
